Doxy Die Cast Review
By Carnal Queen.
For quite a while now, I’ve been the very proud owner of an Original Doxy wand. I absolutely love it, and will rave about it at any given opportunity. Without hesitation, it’s my favourite wand to date, in fact, it’s up there as one of my favourite ever sex toys. It’s incredibly powerful, deep and rumbly, and quite simply divine! The Original Doxy has a plastic body and an aluminium head, which is covered in body-safe PVC which is slightly cushioned, and although this does feel totally fantastic, I’ve often found myself wishing that the head was made from silicone, my sex toy material of choice.
You can probably imagine my elation, when some months ago I discovered that Doxy were going to be releasing a new, Die Cast model of their wand, which would be complete with a silicone head! I was super excited! My beautiful, beloved wand was going to be getting a makeover, and it was about to flourish into my dream toy … Wasn’t it?
The Doxy Die Cast is undoubtedly a stunning piece of British engineering, and I’m fairly sure that most people would agree with that statement (It’s Cornish, and almost as stunning as their coastline!). With a handle formed from cast aluminium and titanium metals, the end product is polished to complete perfection, it’s truly exquisite. There’s absolutely no denying it, a huge factor in the appeal of this wand is how it looks aesthetically, and unsurprisingly, it’s aimed quite heavily at the bdsm market. Any Sub that’s lucky enough to encounter a Dom, expertly wielding a Doxy Die Cast is indeed a very lucky Sub! The visuals with the Doxy Die Cast are incredible, it just oozes individuality and luxury, and it absolutely looks the part. You know the Doxy Die Cast is something special.
Just like the Original Doxy wand, the Die Cast version is capable of operating between 3,000 and 9,000 RPM, and is the most powerful wand massager on the market, boasting 30% more power than the famous Hitachi Magic Wand. The head is also the same size as the Original Doxy and most other ‘full size’ wands, giving you 7.5 inches in circumference, so it will accommodate any standard sized additional attachments, allowing you to take your wand to new heights if you wish. The three, easy press silicone buttons on the handle of the Die Cast model are all LED lit, which is a great addition when you’re using it somewhere dark or dimly lit. With 8 settings and an escalating pulse mode, controlled by the on/off and plus/minus buttons, the Die Cast Doxy operates in the same way as the original model. I have found though, that my Die Cast has a setting memory unlike my original Doxy, which always powers on in the mid-power range.
It comes in a really fantastic hard outer zipped case, which I totally love! The Original Doxy had no long-term storage solution provided with it, and I found that it was hard to find something large enough to accommodate it. Some people might not be too excited about getting a storage case, but I’m totally delighted. Although it’s fairly large in size, it’s a great place to store your wand safely and to keep it in tip-top condition for every use. In fact, if Doxy sold the cases separately, I’d be buying one for my Original Doxy!
I really was so excited by the launch of the Doxy Die Cast, it was everything I had wished for and more, but in truth, it’s left me ambivalent and confused, which is a bitter pill to swallow. On one side of the coin I’m in love with it, it’s fantastic – but on the other, I’m kind of left loving my Original Doxy that little bit more. So let’s see if I can try and explain why …
The first thing we did when the Doxy Die Cast arrived, was give me some Double-Doxy loving! With me face down on the bed, CK happily got to work on my back with both wands simultaneously (yes, my teeth are all still in my head!). I was very curious to know if I would be able to tell which wand was which, and the short answer is that I could, 100% of the time. Firstly, the noise factors in. The Original Doxy is reasonably loud in use, but the Doxy Die Cast is most certainly quieter, which is a definite bonus in my book. The level of noise never bothered me before, and to be honest it still doesn’t, but obviously it’s more pleasant to experience lower levels of ear bashing! That said, the Original Doxy is still a lot quieter than many other wands out there on the market today. I wondered, would I still be able to tell the difference between the two wands when I blocked my hearing? Well, decibels aside, the answer is yes.
The head on the Original Doxy really does feel a lot nicer for body massage than the silicone head on the Die Cast model, because of that cushioned PVC. It has an element of ‘squish’ to it, so you can comfortably knead it into your muscles without causing any discomfort. The Die Cast’s head is a big chunk of heavy silicone, and although it does still feel good for tissue massage, it’s just not quite the same. When used by CK on me, it’s not too much of an issue, but the extra weight of the Die Cast Doxy can be a bit of a hinderance if I’m trying to do some DIY muscle manipulation. To give you some idea of the extra weight, the handle and head of the Original Doxy (with no lead or plug) is approximately 532g, in comparison to the Die Cast being around 700g.
Now, let’s talk about the vibrations! This is where the Doxy Die Cast really screws with my head! The silicone head, which is double weighted, is said by Doxy to produce more thuddy vibrations on the higher settings, but it seems my body can’t decide whether ‘more thuddy’ is actually a good thing or not. The Original Doxy does seem slightly more buzzy than the Die Cast version … I know, I know, that’s not a word I thought I’d ever be using in relation to a Doxy wand either! I have to be absolutely clear here though, the Doxy is in NO WAY a buzzy wand! I don’t even like buzzy things, because they desensitise me and well, that totally sucks, but this is the only way that I can even begin to explain the differences between the two. The Die Cast model produces beautifully deep and rumbly vibrations, which do resonate well into the body, from a head that feels very static and heavy in use. The Original Doxy gives you the same kind of deep and rumbly vibrations, but because the head is so much lighter and softer, it vibrates with more movement. This seems to give the vibrations more travel, in comparison to the Die Cast’s more contained vibrations. If the heads are placed in water, the Original Doxy produces a more widely visible, lively ripple, and the Die Cast produces ripples that are calmer and remain closer to the head. The result, is that the Doxy Die Cast, whilst technically still having the same power levels as the Original Doxy, feels slightly less powerful – and I really wasn’t expecting that at all!
Demonstration purposes only – Don’t try this at home!
I think it’s because of this, that the Doxy Die Cast makes me wait for about 90-120 seconds for a clitoral orgasm. How bloody dare it, I know! Obviously I’m jesting a little there, because 90-120 seconds is still blooming quick to reach an orgasm from a cold start, but when you consider that, with the Original Doxy wand, I’m always Gone in 60 Seconds, you can see there is a definite difference … but it’s still pretty damned good at getting the job done!
I guess the million dollar question is, would I recommend the Doxy Die Cast? Well yes I would, but I think there would be a couple of provisos …
It’s true, the silicone head will likely be a massive draw for some people, but you need to bear in mind that it’s a heavy, solid head, which does seem to dampen down the vibrations a little sadly. If you already own and love an Original Doxy wand, I really would think long and hard before investing in the Die Cast. It’s a lot of money, and if the aesthetics don’t bother you all that much, and you like how the vibrations feel on your original model, there’s a chance it might not be the upgrade you’re hoping for.
If how a sex toy looks is important to you, or if you’re wanting it to be part of a more visual scene, then the Doxy Die Cast will likely be right up your street, because it’s gorgeous! Equally, if you’ve never been lucky enough to experience a Doxy before, and the extra expense isn’t an issue for you, then I think you’ll fall in love at first orgasm – and believe me, that’ll be the first of many!
To Die Cast, or not to Die Cast? That is the question!
Lovehoney very kindly sent me the Doxy Die Cast for free, in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This in no way alters my thoughts or experiences.
