World Friendship Day
By Carnal Queen
“Friends are the family we choose for ourselves”
Written by American writer and journalist, Edna Buchanan, I don’t think that there was ever a truer word spoken. They’re beautiful words, and they ring very true to me, and what better day to celebrate them than on World Friendship Day?
Friends are often taken for granted and overlooked. They’re the people we turn to when things get tough, and are sometimes the ones who take the brunt of a bad mood after an exhausting day. We confide in them, and burden them with things we wouldn’t share with others. They hold your bag whilst you take a pee, or scrape your hair back when you’re hurling up down the toilet. They’ll be with you through thick and thin, tagging you into embarrassing pictures along the way, and the stories they could tell … well, it’s always best to keep them on side!
You could have 50, or just 5, the number doesn’t matter really. One good friend is worth a thousand bad ones, and they’ll always have your back – even if they’re telling you something you don’t really want to hear. You see, they have a tough job really, as they’re often the only people who can tell it you like it really is. Even when they’re saying the opposite of what you think you want to hear, they’re doing it because they love you, and they want the best for you. It sometimes just takes you a little while to realise that.
So today, send them a text, or pick up the phone. Tell them that you appreciate them, and all that they do for you. Remind them that it works both ways, and that you’re there for them too. Today is the day to do it – we all need reminding to say thank you once in a while. Life is too short, tomorrow is not a given, so make the most of your time with those around you.
CK is my absolute world, and the best friend I ever could have. I try to tell him that anyway, but I’m going to make a special effort on World Friendship Day to make sure he really hears me. Friends are our strength when we feel weak, and the people who cheer us on to achieve great things. We need them, and those relationships are something to truly cherish.
I’m also going to shout out an incredible friend to me that some of you may know. Ella Scandal is an absolute machine of a woman. Her talent as an author is incredible, and one which the world has yet to fully see. She’s a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, and SO much more. She’s taking a little break right now, but she’s still smashing life. Baby Scandal is keeping her busy – she’s so beautiful and amazingly cute!
Hold those special people in your life close, and try to be the best friend that you can be in return – it’s the best way to show them how much you care!
Happy World Friendship Day!
